There is only a Superman for my generation and it is Christopher Reeve.
Donner, aided by seven screenwriters recreated a Comic Book in a realistic setting. And they achieved the most important Superheroes movie ever. This film was linked to the second part as the three Lord of the Rings movies, but the secuel is not a masterpiece. This Superman movie is.
We can see a triptych, three settings of Superman life. First, the Science Fiction Krypton, then the down to Earth Smallville and the urban side of Metropolis. And all of that in one movie.
Krypton is perhaps the part that has the most avant garde style. Far away from the comicbook version of that planet, they recreate an organic world, inspired in both the ice lands and the top of the buildings with their sides illuminated. Every single scene is memorable and exciting.
Smallville part is a necessity. We learn how an alien turns into the main role of another species and believes in humanity so fervently. And the boy out-running the train is a metaphor of growing up from a small town to the big leagues.
And Metropolis, the main part of the movie, that could be seeing as an independent part, is the NY version of the Metropolis. The Small Town Boy Scout understands were the real world was.
"Do not interfere". That's right, but when you are part of the people, you must act and react. That's Superman lesson to all of us. A great lesson and a great movie.
By the way, the unforgettable Goldsmith screenplay helps creating this complete pleasure.

Just think about for a moment how things were back in the seventies. Going to the Cinema was something way too different from what it is now. Back then, there was no VCRs and the TVs, at least here in Spain, has not much offer (only two channels).
So if you wanted to see a movie, you have to go to the Theatres and wait loooooong queues buy your ticket, perhaps for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and then go and try to remember as much as you can, because that could be the last time you'll see that film. Or so we thought.
And here we are, my parents and I, in a cold grey day, waiting in a queue to buy the tickets for tomorrow evening. My parents bought me a Mazinger Z comic and I was delighted. A day I will always remember.
The next day (perhaps they bought tickets for the evening sesion, but I think not) we watched the movie, this classic Superman, and I get hooked with the character.
I must confess: in my book, Superman is better than Batman.Superman is the man!! (sorry bat-fans. OK, Batman rules, of course, but Superman is amazing).
Back at home, my room was full of Superman Posters (along Star Wars and Cartoon / Funny Animals) so it was great to be kid and have all that stuff decorating my life. Boy, I really enjoyed this movie.
And it happened again with Superman II and Superman III, but that would be part of another posts.

Valentin, supongo que el texto en inglés es tuyo porque habla de una infancia en Spain.
Para mí, Christopher Reeve es también el "único" Superman.
Ahora que... siete guionistas para fastidiarla en un final que ya desde crío se me antojaba ridículo. En fin...
No una obra maestra, pero sí una estupenda película, muy estimable. Con una maravillosa banda sonora.
Curiosamente, a mí, la parte "necesaria" según tú, es a día de hoy la que más me gusta. La muerte de Glenn Ford, el funeral con aire Fordiano, la separación de la madre y su Remember us, son! Always remember us! con la música de Williams las veía a veces sin ver la peli.
Y no quiero alargar el comentario, pero aunque Superman me parecía el héroe más soso y aburrido de los que leía... si los comparaba a Spiderman, Batman, Daredevil, los otros me "llegaban" más, me identificaba con sus "debilidades" (bueno, Batman no tenía), debo confesar también que para mí Superman es también the man! O como alguna vez le dije a mi hijo hablándole del género de supertipos: "Superman es el puto amo!" Y tiene que ver con los valores que este encarna. Lástima ese "american way of life" en la versión original... casi me quedo con la versión doblada por el sentido de lo que para mí representa el personaje.

David, Tonnerre de Brest es un blog que publico en dos idiomas. Claro que el castellano es el que más se ve, pero procuro que haya muchas cositas en inglés para ir usándolo, mejorándolo y practicándolo. Lo redacto tal cual y voy haciéndolo cada vez con más soltura.
No sé si es una obra maestra o no. Yo creo que ya me vas pillando: si algo me gusta, aunque no sea la maravilla de las maravillas, yo me vuelvo incondicional. Es lo que tiene ser un optimista compulsivo. En fin.
Sin duda, la segunda parte es posiblemente uno de los momentos más cinematográficamente satisfactorios de la película, pero son el prólogo a las verdaderas aventuras. Es lo que me ha pasado con las películas de superhéroes actuales. Una primera parte para saber cómo llega un tipo normal a ser un superhéroe y hay que esperar a la segunda parte (o de la misma película o a la siguiente) para empezar a ver "la hora de las tortas - or clobbering time".
Lo de Superman is the man! lo has explicado maravillosamente. Solo puntualizar una cosa. No es que Batman no tenga debilidades, ¡es que está como una regadera!
Creo que la versión doblada nueva deja mucho que desear. No la he visto, pero me han contado que Superman es un chuli-playa total. Con el tiempo he visto más veces la original, así que me queda un poco atrás en la memoria el doblaje de los setenta y casi no lo recuerdo.
Por cierto, la entrada de Holmes y Yoyo viene la semana próxima. No he terminado de recopilar información ni de ver los videos que he sacado de aquí y allí. Pero la semana que viene, la entrada tiene una dedicatoria clara ¿no te parece?
Una última cosa, a ver si tú que tienes una memoria estupenda. Emitieron en 1976 un episodio de una serie o una mini película en la que unos chicos robaban una manzana, unas tan pequeñas que no eran más grandes que unas uvas.
Les pillaban y les llevaban a un circo donde un autómata tenía una varita como la de los magos se ponía la manzanita en cuestión en dicha varita y le pegaba un susto de impresión al niño protagonista.
La busqué entre los capítulos de Twilight Zone y otras series similares pero no dí con ellos.
La razón de que la busque es que yo tenía cuatro años y fue la primera vez que me asusté de verdad. Y quiero volver a repetir la experiencia. A ver si puedes ayudarme.
Yo la versión con el doblaje no la he visto. Si no hay familiares presentes me gusta verlas en inglés con subtítulos en inglés...
Lo que comentas no me suena. Ya lo siento, pero ahí sí que no te puedo ayudar. Una pena.
De todas formas, hablando de nostalgia, hay un par de pelis de las que quiero hablar y no sé nada de ellas (o muy poco).. Igual en un próximo post hablo de ellas para ver si alguien se acuerda.
