Yesterday I read the sad news about the passing away of one of my favourite guitarist and one that it is linked in my mind with three great rock and roll moments. First one of the guitarist that played along Phil Lynott, in the 80s was part of the great Hard Rock musicians that inspired me to go into rock and then, when I grew interested in jazz, he was there with his melodic Blues guitar lines.
Gary Moore, from Belfast, was an unique voice in guitar playing and as a composer a creative force that we will largely miss.
Here is a selection of many songs where he shined. First his land-mark in hard rock, the Wild Frontier Album with one of the most amazing performances ever in Over the hills and Far Away (largely covered by bands the like of Nightwish).
After that, more songs from that album (Wild Frontier and the remarkable The Loner), followed by his Blues compositions, including a duo with B.B. King. And I finish with a lot of songs from his years working side by side with Lynott. Oh, and don't forget to check the comical sketch by Rowland Rivron along guitarist Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour and bassists Lemmy and Mark King.
They came for him one winter's night.
Arrested, he was bound.
They said there'd been a robbery,
his pistol had been found.
They marched him to the station house,
he waited till the dawn.
And as they led him to the dock,
he knew that he'd been wronged.
"You stand accused of robbery,"
he heard the bailiff say.
He knew without an alibi,
tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom.
Over the hills and far away,
for ten long years he'll count the days.
Over the mountains and the seas,
a prisoner's life for him there'll be.
He knew that it would cost him dear,
but yet he dare not say.
Just where he'd been that fateful night,
a secret it must stay.
He had to fight back tears of rage.
His heart beat like a drum.
For with the wife of his best friend,
he spent his final night of freedom.
Over the hills and far away,
he swears he will return one day.
Far from the mountains and the seas,
back in her arms again he'll be.
Over the hills and far away.
Over the hills and,
over the hills and,
over the hills and far away.
Each night within his prison cell,
he looks out through the bars.
He reads the letters that she wrote.
One day he'll know the taste of freedom.
Over the hills and far away,
she prays he will return one day.
As sure as the rivers reach the seas,
back in his arms again she'll be.
Over the hills and far away,
he swears he will return one day.
As sure as the river reach the seas,
back in his arms is where she'll be.
Over the hills and far away,
she prays he will return one day.
As sure as the rivers reach the sea,
back in her arms is where he'll be.
It has nothing to do with Dickens or the Dickens' Day, but it is a cool way of ending this day posts (fourteen in a row, not bad) with this great bass player and a nice tune. Enjoy.

Ray Charles - My Bonnie

Tonny Sheridan & The Beat Brothers (Beatles) - My Bonnie
Tonny Sheridan sings traditional song with Early Beatles in 1962 [vía spiduction65] My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean My Bonnie lies over the ocean, my Bonnie lies over the sea, My Bonnie lies over the ocean, O bring back my Bonnie to me.
Chorus: Bring back, bring back, O bring back my Bonnie to me, to me: Bring back, bring back, O bring back my Bonnie to me.
O blow ye winds over the ocean, O blow ye winds over the sea. O blow ye winds over the ocean, And bring back my Bonnie to me.
Repeat chorus
Last night as I lay on my pillow, Last night as I lay on my bed, Last night as I lay on my pillow, I dreamed that my Bonnie was dead.
Repeat chorus
The winds have blown over the ocean, The winds have blown over the sea, The winds have blown over the ocean, And brought back my Bonnie to me.
Repeat chorus
My Bonnie leaned over the gas tank, The height of its contents to see, I lit a small match to assist her, O Bring back my Bonnie to me.
Repeat chorus
Last night as I lay on my pillow, Last night as I lay on my bed, I stuck my feet out of the window, In the morning the neighbors were dead.
Repeat chorus
My mother makes beer in the bathtub, My father makes synthetic gin, My sister makes fudge for a quarter, Wouldja believe how the money rolls in?
Repeat chorus
My mother, she drowned in the bathtub, My father, he died from his gin, My sister choked on her chocolate, My stars, what a fix I am in.
Repeat chorus
I tried making beer in the bathtub, I tried making synthetic gin, I tried making fudge for a living, Now look at the shape that I'm in.

Luis Eduardo Aute - " Al alba "
