This song is a well known tune that was part of the Rocky III movie. I didn’t pay much attention to Survivor, the band that recorded this song but this is one of my favourites rock phrases. I must explain why is that.
It all started when I was eight years old. My parents bought the first two what we call here “fascículos”, collectible issues of a series of Classical Music recordings. In the tapes I could hear the Beethoven’s 9th and 5th. I didn’t get the point, but I love the sound and when the singer started singing 40 minutes (a baritone, but I didn’t know this at the moment) I was freak out!!!
I mixed this tapes with my favourite TV music, but I was sure the Beethoven tapes were the real thing. I need to study music. That was a bare necessity.
Latter, when I was eleven, I started studying music and my father made me a gift. A tape of Movie’s soundtrack. And among this orchestral versions, a rock sound made the point. This song was Eye of the Tiger and that guitars are the reason now I am a rocker, a metalhead. I must say there is a link between that early Beethoven tapes and Survivor. Imagine that!
So I made this special post, just for a single song. Let’s begging.

The band achieved its greatest success in the 1980s with its pop-rock sound, which garnered many charting singles, especially in the United States. The band is best known for its 1982 hit "Eye of the Tiger", the theme song for the motion picture Rocky III (US #1). Singles like "Burning Heart" (US #2), "The Search Is Over" (#4 US), "High on You" (#8 US) and "I Can't Hold Back (US #13) continued to chart in the mid-1980s.
The band tweaked its musical direction in 1988 with the release of the slightly heavier Too Hot to Sleep, but due to changes in the music industry and shift of popularity towards bands like Mötley Crüe and Poison, the album barely reached the Billboard 200 in the United States. Because of this, the band split. Singer Jimi Jamison later toured as "Survivor" in the mid-1990s, to the chagrin of the rest of the band. Jamison re-united with the band's other members in 2000 and the band released Reach in 2006, but Jamison left the band after its release and was replaced by Robin McAuley. The band has continued to tour with McAuley into 2008.
"Eye of the Tiger" is a song performed by the American rock group Survivor, and is taken from the album of the same name. It was released on January 1st, 1982, and was written at the request of Sylvester Stallone for the film Rocky III. The original mix of the song, heard in the film, features tiger growls, though the single omits them.

¡Muy bueno! Un guiño por lo de Persépolis.
Hay que ver el juego que da ese tema con mínimos acordes y tres o cuatro secuencias de compases repetidos. Pero los riffs ofrecen tal gama de variantes que los hacen irresistibles.
La del piano me encanta.

Vaya, tengo el ordenador un poco petado y llevo todo el día intentado liberar memoria, la cosa es que con tanto vídeo no consigo ver bien la página y, todavía menos, ver los vídeos.
La cosa es que la canción esta me encanta; para mí es el paradigma de lo que llamo "músicas de superación", especialmente útiles para acompañar escenas elípticas que narran, con pequeños fragmentos, todo un entrenamiento, como es el caso en Roky. También es un tipo de música perfecto cuando la elipsis cuenta una condena en la cárcel que el prisionero aprovecha para mejorarse: le vemos haciendo fondos en su celda, pesas en el patio y estudiando un libro de derecho en la biblioteca.
Barajé la posibilidad de hacer una recopilación de músicas de superación con mi amigo Maelmöri, pero desistimos cuando tomamos conciencia de que debería incluir casi toda la discografía de Queen.

Dr. Krapp, como conocedor de cosas musicales, te digo que discrepo del término Riff. Considero que el riff es un fragmento de frase musical, tocado en ostinato, es decir; repetido un número de veces. Por eso, para mí un riff es parte de una melodía solista. Una frase musical de un patrón, que es para mí lo que suena en esta canción en la parte de la guitarra, sería más correcto. Pero no importa. El término que usas es el que emplean un noventa y nueve por ciento de los músicos. La fuerza de la costumbre.

Así que "músicas de superación". Estupenda visión la tuya. La verdad es que no soy fan de la serie de Rocky y no recuerdo mucho de la primera película, que sé que es un portento, aunque no me guste. Y la tercera me pareció floja.
Perdona por dicrepar contigo Valentín, pero los riffs por lo que yo sé no tienen porque ser un motivo solista si no por el acompañamiento de la voz solista con partes o no de ella. En un blues instrumental donde hay una voz solista y un coro instrumental, la voz solista ejecuta la melodía y puede ser contestada por un riff u ostinato por el grupo acompañante.
¿Ves cómo no nos podemos poner de acuerdo, Doctor Krapp? Es algo típico de la terminología musical. No hay una definición clara y algo se queda a la opinión de cada cual. En tu caso, al hacer sinónimos los términos riff y ostinato, no hay duda de que tienes razón. Pero si consideras riff como parte de una frase musical y no de un patrón de acompañamiento nos alejamos del patrón que son estos acordes.
Como bien dices, en jazz y blues, muchas frases son contestadas por pequeños fragmentos que no son patrones, sino partes de contrapunto melódico.
Para mí un riff es una frase como esa que dices y partes de solos como el fraseado de guitarra del final de Sultans of Swing.
Pero muchos músicos, un noventa y nueve por ciento, te diría que riff es también la serie de acordes que forman el patrón de una canción tipo AC/DC o los powerchords de un tema de rock. Y no estoy de acuerdo. En fin.
