Este es el único disco conceptual de Kiss, pero también uno de los que peor vendieron en su época. Se llegó a suspender una gira de promoción y se limitaron a unas pocas representaciones. Ace Frehley se negó a seguir con la banda, molesto por la dirección artística de la banda.
The Elder fue producido por Bob Ezrin, sin tener las cotas creativas de Destroyer y creo que muy agotado tras la grabación del The Wall de Pink Floyd.
La historia interpretada en este disco es la de un muchacho que bajo la tutela de un tal Morpheus va a aprender el oficio de defensor del bien bajo las órdenes de los Mayores (the Elder). Un poco pomposo para una banda de Rock marchosa.

The story told on this record is that of a boy under the tutelage of a certain Morpheus that will learn the craft of defending good from evil under the command of the Elder. A bit pompous for a hard rock band.
