In 1984, Somerville, Steinbachek and Bronski took by surprise the Dance Scene. All of them openly Gay activist and politically conscious, made the World dance the synth-pop Smalltown Boy.

The song tells the story of a boy that declares his sexual orientation to his family and they abandon him. More songs of the album (The Age of Consent) included Why and It ain't necessarily so from Porgy and Bess.
Later this year, Somerville leave the band and formed Communards, but Bronski Beat survived until 1995.
