Peter Gabriel created this song as a part of a story about his character Mozo. The stories that Gabriel wrote were bring to reallity when OVO came out some years ago.
Red Rain is the song where Gabriel portraits himself bathing in a red rain. There are many interpretations of this image. Somewhere I read that it was about acid rain, but I doubt it. The Red Sea could be the actual geografic sea, but I also could be an imaginary sea that recieves this red rain. There is also a phenomenon observed in Kerala, India, but it was first spot in 2001.
In my opinion, “So” (1986) is the best recording in the Peter Gabriel opera, and saying that is quite a lot, becouse all his recordings are masterpieces. I simply love this music and this song is marvelous.
It is a gift to our ears and a gift to all drummers. Manu Katché is the official set drummer (and one of my favourite drummers), but in this song Gabriel invites Stewart Copeland on hi-hat, making the sound of the rain and Jerry Marotta. Christ Hughes programs the Linn Drum Machine.
And, of course, TONY LEVIN is the bass player!!!
Listen carefully, because there is so many music to be learn in this great song and in the whole album that a single listening won’t be enough. If you are pleased with this song, listen to this
covers by bands like Ill Niño. They are great too.

Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me

Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
I am standing up at the waters edge in my dream
I cannot make a single sound as you scream
It can’t be that cold, the ground is still warm to touch
This place is so quiet, sensing that storm
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
Well I’ve seen them buried in a sheltered place in this town
They tell you that this rain can sting, and look down
There is no blood around see no sign of pain
Hay ay ay no pain
Seeing no red at all, see no rain
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
Red rain-
Putting the pressure on much harder now
To return again and again
Just let the red rain splash you
Let the rain fall on your skin
I come to you defences down
With the trust of a child
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
And I can’t watch any more
No more denial
It’s so hard to lay down in all of this
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is pouring down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I see it
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is pouring down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I’m bathing in it
Red rain coming down
Red rain is coming down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I’m begging you
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Over me in the red red sea
Over me
Over me
Red rain
