Session 5: Blue Lights & Red Flags
The diner door jingled loudly as Danny and Sally burst inside, gasping for air and pale as ghosts. The warmth of the diner smelled like stale grease and coffee beans, a stark contrast to the sewer stench. They ran straight to the booth where two Pittsburgh police officers were spliting a basket of fries.
“Officer, you have to help us!” Danny yelled, his hands shaking. “A giant lizard... a seven-foot reptile man just crawled out of the manhole in the alley! It tried to kill us!”
The older cop paused with a fry halfway to his mouth. He exchanged a weary look with his partner, then sighed, setting the food down. “Look, kid, I know those Primanti sandwiches can hit your stomach heavy, but you can’t be running into shops screaming sci-fi stories. If you two are pulling a prank or smoking something you shouldn't be down by the rivers, beat it before we write you up.”
“We aren't lying! Look at his legs, it hit him with a tail!” Sally insisted, but the officers just shook their heads, pointing toward the exit. It was clear: the authorities weren't going to save them.
Target: Danny's Intellect (IT) is 9. He needs to remember his uncle's old stories.
The Dice: [1] + [4] + [3] = 8
Modifiers: Danny applies his Pittsburgh Lore (Lv1) talent, letting him subtract 1 from the total.
Final Total: 8 - 1 = 7
Result: 7 is less than 9. SUCCESS! Danny connects the dots perfectly.
Experience Gained: Target (9) - Final Roll (7) = 2 EP earned for Danny.
Pulling Sally away from the unhelpful cops, Danny’s face suddenly lit up under the dim lights of the diner's back hallway. “Wait. My Uncle Morty... everyone says he’s crazy, but he’s been talking about 'The Fourth Underground River' and the 'Scaled Intruders' for ten years. He lives right over in Troy Hill and keeps a bunker full of weird military surplus gear because he thinks the city is going to get invaded.”
Sally looked back out the window. Down the street, the wooden pallets in the alleyway rattled violently. The creature was breaking free. “Right now, crazy sounds exactly like what we need. Call him!”
Danny dropped a few coins into the greasy payphone and dialed from memory. After four rings, a gruff, paranoid voice picked up: “Who is this? They monitor the lines after midnight!”
“Uncle Morty, it’s Danny! One of them crawled out of a manhole in the Strip District! It’s seven feet tall, yellow eyes, and it tried to eat us!”
There was a sharp gasp on the other end, followed by the metallic click of a shotgun racking. “I knew it! The convergence has begun! Stay in the light, don't look them in the eyes, and get to the old warehouse by the 16th Street Bridge. I'm loading up the truck. Don't let them mark you with the spit!”
