Truth is the first song I've ever listened of Deep Purple was this. In the video version, so outdated then like it is now, but in the Mad Max tradition, I found a band that crafted a perfect song. Crazy lyrics, great grove and a song that goes like a roller coaster; from low action to full throttle, going up and down and always so alive.
The host of the TV show where I watched the video back in 1984 said that it was a reunion and that the band was classic. I didn't knew that (I was only 12!) but I enjoyed so much the music that joining some money from my allowance I bought the tape. Not all the songs were of my liking but I listened and relistened the tape until I knew it by heart. Then my friend Peig lent me Made in Japan and I instantly became a Deep Purple fan. Smoke on the Water, of course was some song, but this Knocking at Your Back Door is still my DP favourite.
Deep Purple - Knocking At Your Back Door
Sweet Lucy was a dancer
When Lucy met the rocket
She made electric shadows
Oh it's not the kill
Sweet Nancy was so fancy
And none of us could reach that high
So we put her on the hit list
The point of no return
Now how you know the score
It's the thrill of the chase
And now you're learning
The members that she toyed with
No it's knocking at your door
And now she eases gently
I had to touch and please her
Because she was a samurai
It's knocking at the door
She never knew the reason why
Knocking at your door
With that smile on my face
Oh it's not the kill
It's the thrill of the chase
What's knockin' at your back door
The point of no return
With that smile on her face
And now you know the score
From her Austin to her Bentley
And now you're learning
It's not against the law
And one of us could reach that high
Of a common cunning linguist
Had to be the aristocracy
She came on like a teaser
You know it's no good running
Knockin' at your back door
Beyond our fingertips
But none of us would chance her
Oh oh, it's not the kill
Feel it coming
It's the thrill of the chase
Because she was a samurai
Suddenly she feels so young
You know it's no good running
I can't deny it
You know it's no good running
I can't deny it
With that smile on her face
The lock was in my pocket
Sweet Lucy was a dancer
What's knockin' at your back door
I can't deny it
A master of many tongues
No it's not against the law
Enjoy a little paradise
Feel it coming
She made electric shadows
Feel it coming
But none of us would chance her
To get into her pantry
At city club were something in diplomacy
Beyond our fingertips
It's knocking at the door
