The party launched a dynamic breach into the treasury vault, though Thaddeus's arcane barrier spell fizzled out out of his control. Forced into a tactical fallback, Elanna and Darkblade violently engaged the awakened dire wolves while Niles ambushed the blinded chieftain from the rafters.
Coordinating their frontline vanguard with clinical focus, Elanna and Darkblade drive their steel forward to permanently eliminate the threat of the guard hounds. Darkblade steps directly into the path of the stunned alpha wolf, locking his armored arm into a brutal, leverage-heavy chokehold that ends the beast's thrashing with a single, sharp snap of its neck. Simultaneously, Elanna wheels around and brings her heavy greatsword downward in a thunderous, decapitating arc, cleanly severing the neck of the crippled second hound and putting it out of its misery before it can let loose another howl.
Just as the first beast collapses, Thaddeus spots the dying alpha wolf convulse, gathering its last bit of feral energy to attempt a desperate, blind bite at Darkblade's exposed heel. From his high perch on the boss's shoulders, Niles spots the movement and hollers a frantic warning. Showing immense courage now that his magical reserves are fully depleted, Thaddeus steps forward into the melee fray, gripping his oak staff with both hands. He drives the iron-shod tip of his quarterstaff straight down into the snapping beast's skull, shattering its final resistance and locking the room down securely.
However, the temporary safety of the backline comes at a painful cost. Enraged by the deaths of his pets and the agonizing wounds in his neck, the massive Bugbear Chieftain thrashes blindly in a berserk frenzy. His heavy, clawed hand swats upward through the dark, successfully catching a handful of Niles's thick wool cloak. With a guttural bellow of pure hatred, the brute rips the nimble halfling cleanly off his back and violently slams him down against the unforgiving stone floor with a bone-jarring, sickening crash that knocks the wind straight out of the rogue.
• Niles: Wisdom (Perception) Check. Roll: 11 + 3 = 14 (Success). Warns the spellcaster.
• Thaddeus: Melee Staff Attack (Option C fallback). Roll: 14 + 3 = 17 vs. Wolf AC 10 (Hit!). Deals 4 bludgeoning damage, decisively finishing the alpha hound.
• Bugbear Chieftain: Reeling attack while Blinded (Disadvantage). Rolls: 18, 15 + 5 modifier = 20 vs. Niles AC 17 (Hit!).
• Damage Taken: Niles takes 5 bludgeoning damage from the heavy floor slam.
