The sky above the port was the color of a television, tuned to a dead channel. Except it wasn't a dead channel. It was bad syntax.
The rain didn't feel cold anymore. Ever since Billy showed her how to read the flickering green phosphorescence bleeding through the mortar of the brick walls, Amanda Grey looked at the world through shattered glass. Tonight, that glass was cutting them to ribbons.
"Keep moving, kid!" Amanda barked, her voice raspy from smoke and a lifetime of cheap cigarettes. She threw her weight against the heavy fire door of the industrial laundry matrix, shoving 14-year-old Adrian into the dark interior. Her 55-year-old knees screamed in protest, a lingering reminder of the simulation's commitment to persistent physical trauma.
Behind them, the rain didn't splash against the asphalt; it pixelated. Footsteps echoed down the alleyway—heavy, rhythmic, completely devoid of human variation. Two figures stepped under the flickering halogen light. They wore immaculate gray suits that remained perfectly dry. Their faces were terrifyingly symmetrical, and where their eyes should have been, lines of scrolling execution logs ran top-to-bottom behind polarized lenses.
Daemons. The automated garbage collectors of reality.
"Billy, the service lift!" Amanda shouted, drawing her heavy service revolver. She leveled it at the lead suit and squeezed off two rounds. The bangs were deafening in the enclosed alley, but the bullets simply stopped mid-air two inches from the lead Daemon's chest, losing their kinetic vectors and dropping to the wet concrete like spent pennies.
Inside the laundry room, Billy Blue was already frantically hammering away at his bulky, grease-stained laptop, balanced precariously on top of an industrial dryer. His pay-as-you-go flip phone was rubber-banded to the chassis, bridging a local connection into the facility's legacy automation node.
"I'm on it, I'm on it! Don't let them touch the kid!" Billy's fingers were a blur. The screen cast a harsh blue glow over his pale, sweating face. "The elevator's hardwired to the mainframe. The logic gate is locked. I need to force a root command..."
Adrian was curled in the corner beside a mountain of soiled linens, clutching a tattered high-school backpack to his chest like a shield. He wasn't crying; he was staring at his own hands. Every time the Daemons drew closer, the skin on Adrian's fingers flickered, momentarily revealing glowing strings of hexadecimal code beneath the epidermis. He wasn't just a bystander caught in the crossfire—he was an uncompiled asset. A living system glitch.
The lead Daemon stepped through the doorway, its arm extending with terrifying, mechanical precision. Its fingers stretched out, morphing into jagged, metallic spikes of pure static.
"Executing quarantine protocol," the Daemon droned, its voice a horrific layering of a dozen synthetic text-to-speech engines.
Billy bit his lip, his eyes widening as he found the correct directory. "Not today, you glorified antivirus. SUDO RUN!" He slammed his palm onto the Enter key.
With a deafening screech of grinding gears, the heavy steel security gate above the service lift slammed downward, cutting off the Daemon's advance just as the elevator basket began its shuddering descent into the sub-basement. Sparks showered into the dark as the entity's static fingers ground against the rapidly closing steel barrier.
They were falling into the dark, safe for the next few seconds, but the Daemons now knew exactly who they were.
