The Ruined Tower

Combat erupted inside the ruined tower as a pack of giant rats ambushed the party. While Elanna and Darkblade held the front rank, Niles utilized the distractions to execute a brilliant flanking maneuver. With a high-stakes stealth attack, Niles pierced the alpha rat, killing it instantly and causing the remaining beasts to flee in terror.
Determined not to let the fleeing vermin escape deeper into the underbelly of the ruins to sound an alarm, the party reacts with fluid coordination. Darkblade drops his bow, reaches to his belt, and launches a heavy steel dagger with a snap of his wrist. The blade cuts true, pinning one scurrying rat through its thick tail to the splintered floorboards. Elanna charges alongside him, her heavy iron-shod boots kicking up loose dirt and masonry dust as she brings her massive greatsword down in a brutal, crushing arc to finish the trapped creature before it can tear itself free.
The final surviving beast attempts a desperate, frantic scramble up a section of crumbling, moss-slick granite wall. From the rear rank, Thaddeus steps forward, raising his gnarled oak staff as he chants a sharp syllable of power. A crystalline dart of ruby light leaves his fingertips—a Magic Missile that twists unerringly through the shadows. It strikes the climbing rodent mid-air with a loud, arcane pop, dropping it lifeless into the weeds below. Silence returns to the ruined tower stump, broken only by the heavy breathing of the adventurers.
"The threat is taken care of," Niles murmurs, wiping a thin layer of grime from his daggers. With the immediate danger systematically neutralized, the party turns their attention back to the foul-smelling corner of the room. Pushing aside the blood-spattered leaf litter, chewed bone fragments, and rotted cloth of the main nest, Niles's sharp eyes spot something anomalous. Half-buried under a mound of dark loam sits an old, rusted iron coffer, its heavy padlock still firmly intact despite decades of damp decay.
• Elanna: Greatsword Melee Strike. Roll: 14 + 4 = 18 (Hit!). Damage: 10 slashing. Fleeing rat defeated.
• Thaddeus: Casts Magic Missile. Automatically hits. Damage: 4 force. Final rat defeated.
• Niles: Search Check. Roll: 18 + 2 = 20 (Success!). Found hidden rusted coffer.
