The Ruined Tower
The thick shade of the forest cuts off the midday sun, enveloping our party in a heavy, twilight-colored world of shifting shadows. We have tracked the rumors straight into the dense heart of the woods, where small creatures rustle unseen through the thickets. Suddenly, the underbrush breaks open into a silent, moss-grown glade. There, built directly into the jagged hillside, stands the shattered remnant of the tower.
It is a total wreck. What might have once reached forty feet into the heavens is now a blasted stump of fitted stone, no more than ten feet high, looking as though it were struck by a monumental bolt of divine lightning. Great blocks of granite litter the clearing like forgotten grave markers.
Darkblade leads the way, high-stepping over a crumbled section of the outer wall that barely reaches a foot high. Inside, the floor is an absolute mess of ancient debris—rotted timbers, dead leaves, and shattered stones. Toward the back wall, half-buried beneath fallen crossbeams, a heavy oak door leads deeper under the hill.
"Hold on," Niles whispers, his small halfling hand dropping to the hilt of his short sword. "Look left. The leaves."
Before anyone can draw a clean breath, a pile of debris explodes. A giant, grayish-brown rat, easily two feet long with feral red eyes, pokes its head free and hisses violently, baring razor-sharp teeth. Behind it, three more lean, starving monstrosities leap from their nests, lunging forward to defend their territory!
"To arms!" Elanna shouts, drawing her massive two-handed sword with a ringing scrape of steel. "Don't let them surround us!"
From the rear, Thaddeus begins tracing a glowing glyph in the air, his voice echoing with arcane resonance, while Darkblade nocks an arrow into his long bow, pulling the string taut as the front rank braces for impact.
