The Ruined Tower

Securing a dark order letter bearing an obsidian cult sigil from the fallen chieftain's throne, the adventurers opted to systematically purge the leaderless lower barracks before leaving. With the dungeon entirely cleared, they prepared to venture upward.
Before committing their entire battle-weary group to the pitch-black, untested masonry of the hidden passage, Niles is sent ahead into the damp stone shaft to stealthily scout the exit perimeter on the surface hills. Moving like a ghost through the rising subterranean chimney, the halfling rogue steps over fallen rubble and slips silently toward the flickering glare of daylight. Poking his head past a dense screen of tangled, thorny briars at the threshold, he scans the horizon with a hawk's eye. While the immediate grassy hillside remains completely clear of active ambushes, he notices a crumbling, wind-worn exterior stone staircase hugging the cliffside, winding further up toward the ancient tower's crowning peak.
Niles flashes a bird-call signal back down the shaft, guiding the rest of the party safely to the surface. Standing on the sunlit hill, the group decides against an immediate return to town, choosing instead to march up the exterior cliffside steps and investigate the crumbling upper parapets. Stepping onto the windswept roof of the ancient stronghold, the heroes look out across the vast borderlands. The peace is short-lived, however, as Thaddeus immediately points out an unnatural, geometric groove gouged into the center of the flagstones.
Brushing aside decades of bird droppings and accumulated moss, the wizard uncovers an ancient, defaced astronomical sundial. The old bronze gnomon has been crudely warped, and the face of the dial is freshly slathered in thick, dark obsidian chalk to form precise celestial coordinates. Analyzing the strange glyphs, Thaddeus realizes the horrific truth: the mercenaries weren't just guarding a treasure vault below. The cult was utilizing this exact high, unobstructed vantage point to calculate a rare cosmic alignment required to rip open a localized planar rift. The clock is officially ticking.
• Navigation Pivot: Party climbs the cliff face to explore the ruined upper deck (Option B).
• Thaddeus: Intelligence (Arcana) Check to inspect the ritual device. Roll: 11 + 4 modifier = 15 (Success!).
• Discovery: The modified sundial acts as a cosmic tracking node. The occult plot requires an active astrological alignment.
