Disaster at Grand Atomica 1

Entry #01 — The 5:43 Countdown

Welcome to the first chronicle of the Star Shards. In a world still reeling from "The Blip," five ordinary people with extraordinary burdens are all that stand between humanity and an interdimensional extinction event.

This isn't a story of capes and secret lairs. It’s a story of seconds ticking away on a clock that ends at 5:43 PM.

The Setup: 10:03 AM

The vision hit like a physical weight. Five strangers in San Diego collapsed, their minds flooded with the same terrifying imagery: the violet hum of Gran Atomica’s Reactor #4, a spindly creature of pure light rising through the floor, and a world-ending explosion that tears the sky open.

Now, it is 10:45 AM. The Star Shards have mobilized. Thanks to the frantic help of a lab assistant named Kevin, they’ve tracked the one person who can stop this—Dr. Samantha Gortani—to a derelict alley near SDSU. She’s been snatched by "Telek" and "Boom," two Gifted who have traded their humanity for the promise of power in the "new world order" the invasion will bring.

Encounter at the Alley

Current Time: 10:46 AM

The Scene: A narrow, trash-strewn alley. Telek is playing with a floating switchblade; Boom stands guard over a battered Dr. Gortani and her prototype device: The Immoliator.

Initiative Order:

  1. Mirage (Amanda): King of Hearts — Action Taken: Illusion.

  2. Wink (Fred): Jack of Clubs — Pending.

  3. The Kidnappers: Queen of Diamonds — Distracted by Illusion.

  4. Delta (Derrick): 8 of Hearts — Pending.

  5. Pyrex (Rebecca): 6 of Spades — Pending.

  6. Refract (Adelle): 3 of Diamonds — Pending.

The Opening Move:

Amanda (Mirage) kicked off the rescue. Using her police training and her gift for Illusion, she manifested a wall of flashing blue-and-red lights at the alley entrance. The sound of sirens echoed off the brick walls.

The Roll (Focus): Success!

The Result: Telek and Boom are "Distracted." They have turned their backs to the Shards, eyes fixed on the phantom police squad.

The smell of rotting cardboard and ozone hung heavy in the air. Amanda stood at the mouth of the alley, her jaw set, her hand steady as she maintained the shimmering image of the San Diego PD. "Go," she hissed through gritted teeth. "I can't hold the sound forever."

Fred (Wink) felt the familiar tingle in his marrow—the sensation of his molecular structure preparing to fold. Across the alley, he saw Dr. Gortani slumped in a chair, her leg bleeding, her eyes wide with terror. Just three feet from her sat the Immoliator, the only thing that could make the "Light Bringer" bleed.

Behind him, Rebecca (Pyrex) was already moving, her skin hardening into a translucent, diamond-like shell. She didn't care about the distraction; she cared about the girl in the chair. Derrick (Delta) reached out, his hand glowing with a faint green light as he prepared to boost Fred’s speed or Rebecca’s strength.

In the SUV, Adelle (Refract) watched her friends charge into the mouth of madness. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She gripped her bat, closed her eyes, and let the light pass right through her. She was gone—a ghost in the machine—sliding out of the car door to flank the thugs.

The kidnappers are looking the wrong way. The opening is perfect. But every second they spend here is a second the Light Bringer moves closer to the core.

The clock is at 10:46 AM.

The opening gambit is in motion. The air in the alleyway ripples with heat, light, and the sudden displacement of matter as the Star Shards strike with surgical precision.

Phase 1 – The Rescue

Current Time: 10:47 AM

The Situation: Telek and Boom are Distracted (–2 to all rolls/Parry) and the Shards have The Drop (+4 to hit and damage) due to the illusionary police raid.

1. Wink (Fred) – Teleporting Dr. Gortani

  • Action: Teleporting himself and one passenger (Gortani) to the SUV.

  • Roll (Focus d8): $d8: 5, d6 (Wild): 2$. Success!

  • Result: Fred blinks out of existence and reappears next to the chair. He grabs the doctor and vanishes again before the ropes even hit the ground.

2. Delta (Derrick) – Stun Gun on Telek

  • Action: Running strike with the stun gun.

  • Roll (Fighting d8 +4 for The Drop): $d8: 7+4 = 11, d6 (Wild): 3+4 = 7$. Raise!

  • Damage: Stun gun (Special).

  • Result: Telek must make a Vigor roll at –4 (due to the Raise) or be Stunned.

  • Telek Vigor Check: $d8: 2, d6 (Wild): 4$. Fail! Telek is Stunned. He drops his switchblade, and his telekinetic grip on reality shatters.

3. Refract (Adelle) – Snatching the Immoliator

  • Action: Stealthily grabbing the device while invisible.

  • Roll (Athletics d6): $d6: 5, d6 (Wild): 4$. Success!

  • Result: The heavy metallic device seemingly floats into the air as Adelle hauls it toward the perimeter.

4. Pyrex (Rebecca) – Providing Cover

  • Action: Standing her ground with the axe, shielding the retreat.

  • Special: Her Environmental Resistance (Glassy Skin) is active. Her Toughness is effectively 6.

A Blur of Light and Glass

The plan unfolded in a heartbeat.

Fred didn't walk; he folded space. There was a sharp crack—the sound of air rushing to fill a vacuum—and suddenly he was standing behind Dr. Gortani. "Hold your breath, Doc," he muttered. Another crack, and the chair was empty. Gortani let out a muffled yelp as she found herself dumped unceremoniously into the backseat of the SUV, thirty feet away from her captors.

At the same moment, Derrick moved like a man possessed. He lunged out of the shadows of a dumpster, the electrodes of his stun gun hissing with blue electricity. He jammed the weapon into Telek's side. The biker’s eyes rolled back in his head, his mohawk trembling as five thousand volts of "justice" overrode his nervous system. The spinning switchblade he’d been flirting with clattered harmlessly to the asphalt.

"The device!" Boom roared, his voice a gravelly bark as he realized the "cops" weren't firing. He lunged for the crate where the Immoliator sat, but his hands grasped only empty air. To his eyes, the machine simply vanished into the ether.

Adelle, invisible and breathless, was already stumbling back toward the van, the heavy weight of the Immoliator straining her arms.

"Stay back!" Rebecca shouted, stepping into the center of the alley. Her skin had fully crystallized now, reflecting the dim San Diego sun like a jagged diamond. She planted her feet and leveled her fireman’s axe at Boom and the two thugs. "You want to watch the world burn? You're gonna have to go through me first."

Boom's face contorted in rage. He didn't care about the cops anymore. He saw the "glass girl" and his hands began to glow with a violent, flickering orange light.

The Current Situation

  • Dr. Gortani: Rescued and in the SUV (1 Wound).

  • The Immoliator: Secured by Adelle.

  • The Enemy: Telek is Stunned (cannot act). Boom is furious and preparing to fire a Bolt. The two Thugs are drawing their knives.

Boom's Action: He’s going to blast Rebecca (Pyrex) to clear a path to the van!

Thugs: They are rushing Derrick (Delta) to avenge their leader.

Current Time: 10:48 AM

Entry #02 — The Breakout

The mission shifted from a surgical strike to a high-speed extraction. The Star Shards don't have the luxury of a prolonged street fight; every minute spent trading blows with bikers is a minute the Light Bringer spends burrowing through the Earth’s crust.

The Great Escape

Current Time: 10:49 AM

The Situation: The Shards are attempting to disengage from combat and flee in the SUV.

1. Movement & Disengagement

  • Adelle (Refract): Stumbles into the SUV with the Immoliator. She is still invisible, causing the heavy device to appear as if it's floating in the back seat.

  • Derrick (Delta): Backpedals away from the Stunned Telek, keeping his stun gun leveled at the advancing thugs.

  • Fred (Wink): Having teleported Gortani, he is already in the driver's seat, key in the ignition.

  • Rebecca (Pyrex): The last one out. She uses her Hold action to stay in the doorway of the alley, forcing the enemies to move around her.

2. Enemy Reaction: Boom’s Fury

  • Action: Boom fires a Bolt (Fire) at the retreating SUV!

  • Roll (Focus d8): $d8: 3, d6 (Wild): 5$. Success.

  • Damage: $2d6$: $5+2 = 7$.

  • Result: The blast scorched the rear bumper of the SUV. The vehicle’s Toughness (usually 10-12 for an SUV) absorbs the hit. The paint bubbles, but the frame holds.

3. The Getaway Roll (Driving)

  • Driver: Fred (Wink)

  • Roll (Driving d6): $d6: 6 \text{ (Ace!)} \rightarrow 3. \text{Total: } 9$. Raise!

  • Result: Fred slams the vehicle into reverse, tires shrieking. He executes a perfect J-turn, Narrowly missing a dumpster, and guns it onto the main road. The bikers are left in a cloud of acrid smoke and ozone.

Smoke and Mirrors

"Everyone in? GO! GO! GO!" Rebecca lunged into the moving SUV, her glassy skin scraping against the doorframe with a sound like grinding industrial diamonds.

The interior of the vehicle was chaos. In the back, the Immoliator was being held by what looked like thin air as Adelle struggled to remain focused. Dr. Gortani was huddled on the floorboards, clutching her injured leg, her face pale.

"I have the device," Adelle’s voice drifted from the empty air, shaky but determined. "But it's heavy... and I think I'm going to be sick."

A sudden BOOM rocked the chassis. A lance of orange flame erupted from Boom's outstretched palms, splashing against the rear window and blackening the bumper. The heat was instantaneous, but Fred didn't flinch. He didn't have the "Gift" of speed, but he had the heart of a man who spent his life protecting data—and now, he was protecting the world.

He wrenched the steering wheel, the SUV tilting on two wheels for a terrifying second before slamming back down and roaring toward the I-5 North. Through the rearview mirror, he saw Telek slumped on the ground and Boom screaming into the sky, their chance at "glory" disappearing in a haze of tire smoke.

"Check the Doctor!" Fred barked, his eyes locked on the road as he wove through campus traffic. "And somebody check that GPS. How far are we from the Gran?"

Derrick was already over Gortani, his hands glowing with a soft, restorative light. "She’s stable, but the leg is bad. Doc, we need you awake. We're heading to the plant."

Gortani looked up, her glasses cracked. "You don't understand," she rasped. "The Immoliator... it's not just a weapon. It’s a tuner. If you don't calibrate it to the specific frequency of the Light Bringer when he appears, the feedback won't just kill us—it will accelerate the meltdown."

The Road Ahead

Current Time: 11:15 AM (5 hours, 28 minutes remaining)

Location: I-5 North, heading toward the desert.

The Shards are on the move, but the journey to Gran Atomica is roughly 30-40 minutes.

The SUV is a hive of frantic activity as it hurtles north. While the engine roars, the Star Shards turn the cramped interior into a mobile laboratory, infirmary, and command center.

Preparation En Route

Current Time: 11:45 AM

Location: I-5 Northbound

1. Calibration (The Device)

  • Character: Jax (I'll use Sarah/Refract since Jax wasn't in the final PC list, or assume Sarah handles the Science). Let's use Adelle (Refract) since she has Science d6 and is already holding it.

  • Roll (Science d6): $d6: 3, d6 (Wild): 2$. Fail.

  • Result: The device hums ominously and spits a spark. Dr. Gortani winces. "Careful! The focus lens is misaligned. Don't touch the primary capacitor yet!" No bonus gained, but the device is still functional.

2. Medical Aid (The Doctor)

  • Character: Derrick (Delta)

  • Roll (Healing d8): $d8: 10 \text{ (Ace!)} \rightarrow 2. \text{Total: } 12$. Two Raises!

  • Result: Derrick doesn't just patch the wound; his gift for Boosting Traits flows through his medical touch. Dr. Gortani’s wound is completely healed. She feels 10 years younger and much more capable of assisting with the Immoliator.

3. The Cover Story (Infiltration)

  • Character: Fred (Wink)

  • Action: Hacking into the Gran Atomica security roster to insert "Expert Consultants" into the system.

  • Roll (Hacking d8): $d8: 7, d6 (Wild): 4$. Success.

  • Result: Fred successfully creates five digital guest badges. They won't bypass the physical metal detectors, but they’ll get them past the first gate without the guards reaching for their rifles.

The Calm Before the Atom

"Hold still, Doctor," Derrick murmured, his hands glowing with a soft, rhythmic emerald light. As he worked, the jagged tear in Gortani’s leg knit itself together, the bruising vanishing as if time were being reversed.

Gortani gasped, flexing her leg. "I... I haven't felt this clear-headed in years. Thank you, young man." She sat up straighter, looking at the Immoliator with renewed focus. "Since you've stabilized me, let me handle the tuning. If we miss the resonance of the Light Bringer, the feedback will be... well, let's just say we won't need to worry about the invasion."

In the front seat, Fred’s fingers were a blur across his laptop. "Alright, we’re in the system. As far as the front gate is concerned, we’re a specialized containment team from the Department of Energy. It’s a thin lie, and it won't hold up to a phone call to DC, but it gets us into the courtyard."

"And then what?" Amanda asked, checking the magazine of her pistol. "Once we're in, we’re still five people with a sci-fi dish trying to break into a nuclear reactor. The guards aren't going to just hand us the keys to Reactor #4."

"Then we use the one thing the Immolia don't have," Rebecca said, looking out at the shimmering desert heat. "A reason to give a damn."

The massive cooling towers of Gran Atomica appeared on the horizon, rising like concrete giants from the sand. The clock on the dashboard flicked over. 12:00 PM. Five hours and forty-three minutes remain.

Arrival at the Main Gate

The SUV pulls up to the reinforced steel barrier. A guard with an M-16 slung over his shoulder steps out of the booth, squinting at the vehicle.

"State your business. This is a restricted area."

How do the Shards handle the gate?
