Kiss Paul Stanley 1978

El disco de Paul Stanley en solitario es casi un disco de Kiss normal. Su música se parece a la que hace con el grupo y pienso que no podía ser de otra manera. Es una de las fuerzas creativas más claras de la banda, como lo demostrará en la etapa posterior al maquillaje y porque su estilo es cien por cien Kiss. No volverá a sacar un disco en solitario hasta 2006. Paul Stanley es muchas veces más del cincuenta por ciento de Kiss.

Como curiosidad, Bob Kulick toca la guitarra en el disco. Es el hermano mayor de Bruce, guitarrista de Kiss durante más de una década.

Los discos en solitario no funcionaron mal, pero no reportaron grandes beneficios. Una situación que se verá agrabada por las disputas internas de la banda. Pero eso es material para otra entrada.

Paul Stanley's solo album is almost a Kiss album. His music is similar to the music he composes to the band. It could not be otherwise. One of the strongest creative forces of the band, as could be seen in the post-makeup era, because his style is one hundred percent Kiss. It will not make a solo record until 2006. Paul Stanley is often more than a fifty percent of Kiss creative force.

A curious data, Bob Kulick plays guitar on the LP. He is the brother of Bruce, Kiss guitarist for over a decade.

The solo albums wasn't a total failure, but didn't bring significant benefits. A situation that will increase by internal disputes of the band members. But that's something we will discuss later.

Westworld 1973.

Yul Brynner wearing a cowboy outfit? And there is no Magnificent Seven? Then, ...He's a robot!!

This Terminator's old relative was a success back in 1973, when director Michael Crichton adapted his own novel. It has the honor of being the first movie to add computerized images and the not so good record of beign the last MGM movie.

An amusement park called Dellos offers their clients the possibility of interacting with almost-real androids in three "worlds": Western, Medieval and Roman. Richard Benjamin in the role of Peter Martin is invited to enjoy a day at the park.

All seems OK, until the central computer malfuntions (a virus many years before a computer virus were created, that's premonition!) sets free the droids and they behave the way they are supposed to do an they excel at it! A Gunslinger does what he does best, shooting at people!

Now, let's go for the peculiar data: the movie has a second part, Futureworld and a TV Series (Beyond Westworld). But it was in 2007 when Tarantino wanted to do a remake with non-other than Schwarzenegger. The son in the role of the father.

This movie, like any other from Crichton in the seventies, is a pure pleasure. All of the characters, expecially Richard Benjamin's Peter Martin are superb. And Yul Brynner, returning to Chris Adams outfit (the same one) is the best Terminator there was before Cameron bring us the future nightmare.

Kiss Peter Criss 1978.

Este disco fue una demostración de las diversas maneras de entender la música de Kiss. No olvidemos que Peter Criss es el mayor de los cuatro y que tenía muchas tablas antes de juntarse con Simmons y Stanley. Así que podemos escuchar su música, más al estilo Rock and Roll e incluso Blues. La mayor parte de las canciones pertenecen a lo que iba a grabarse con Lips, la banda anterior de Criss.

Es un disco que me gusta mucho y que me parece el más curioso de los cuatro, sin tener un tema que pueda destacar como sería el caso de New York Groove. Tuvo dos singles, pero no llegó a vender mucho.

This album shows that there was different ways of understanding Kiss music inside the band. Do not forget that Peter Criss is the eldest of four and had many experience before joining Simmons and Stanley. So we can hear here his music, more Rock and Roll and Blues than usually Kiss adds to their songs. Most of the songs belong to what was going to be Lips' music, Criss's previous band.

It's an album that I like and I think the most interesting of all four, but without a theme that could be pointed at as it was the case of New York Groove. This LP had two singles, but neither sold that much.

Mickey Mouse's New Car (1999).

Looking for new cartoons to watch, I found this TV series adapting Mickey to the new times, but keeping the magic of the old shorts. It has nothing to do with Playhouse and it is not a 3D product. It is plain TV animation with a fun series of gags and a story that could have been released in the 40s, for example. Its name is Mickey Mouse Works.

In this occasion, Mickey has troubles with his lifetime car (the same problems Archie has with his own car) and buys another one, newer but more... well, see it for yourself.

Kiss Ace Frehley 1978.

Este disco en Solitario de Frehley vendió un poco más que los otros tres, llegando a dar el único éxito reseñable de los cuatro discos de los miembros de Kiss por separado. La canción se llama New York Groove y está muy en la onda de la música de Kiss.

This Frehley solo album sold a little more than the other three, releashing the only hit of the four discs of the members of Kiss solo albums. The song is called New York Groove and is very much Kiss music style.

This short chapter is the Battle that confronts Karza and a Wanna-be Superhero that didn't last and that in the nineties was transformed into a Gift book character. You can submit a name (a boy or a girl's name) and then they send you back (it costed $10) a comic book with the adventures of the child while transforming into a Captain Universe and solve a cosmic attack. Not much.


The battle has a lot of FX but no more. Captain Universe seems to start wining when the Micronauts, using the Endevour, use the Prometheus Pit to return to the Microverse. Karza notices that and abandons the battle and Doctor Prometheus body to pursue his enemies. End of battle.


After this brief career, Ray Coffin returns to his normal self and to his son Steve. The Enigma Force returns to the Microverse.


A weak moment in an almost perfect story. But do not fret. The next four chapters are what we are looking for. The best there is in Galactic Battles after Star Wars.

The Micronauts, back to the Microverse arrived to a freed Spartak were the Acroyears await them and greet them. Karza returns to Homeworld to face the Force Commander, the name  the Prince has chosen to lead the rebel army. They have being aided by the Shadow Priests but the Dog Soldiers, Karza's army are too much. 


The Dog Soldiers also attack Spartak and Acroyear must do something dangerous: link his mind to the planet and transform the lifeless rock into a Battleship, a Worldmind as Acroyears call it.

Being the good guys doesn't mean always winning. That's the main goal of this chapter. Karza is being attacked in many flanks but he is not loosing a single battle. He even captured Marionette and Rann.


The Body Banks attack is loosing its steam and the Dog Soldiers regain control of the situation. But it is Spartak turned into Worldmind, with its suicide attack the turning point in the rebels first wave. The Dog Soldiers lands on Spartak showing no piety, killing everybody, including infants.


The Acroyears fight bravely, loosing many lives, but winning. And they give the prisoners the mercy of the sword.

Kiss Gene Simmons (1978).

Por si todo lo que habían hecho hasta el momento fuese poco, el contrato con Casablanca obligaba a grabar discos en solitario. Así que Kiss y su mánager se plantearon un plan que les llevaría al límite en popularidad. Por un lado una película (ya hablaré sobre ella) y por otro, sacar en un sólo día (dieciocho de septiembre de 1978) cuatro discos, uno con cada músico.

Hicieron los cuatro discos siguiendo los gustos de cada músico y ninguno contó con los demás miembros de la banda para grabar las canciones.

Empiezo por el de Gene Simmons, no por nada, simplemente porque en la Wikipedia sale el primero, y prefiero no perderme.

Es un disco muy variado, con más canciones cercanas al pop-rock que al rock duro, incluyendo una versión de When You Wish Upon a Star. Por cierto, Gene contó con muchos colaboradores (os recomiendo la lista completa en la entrada de la wikipedia) pero me resulta curioso que aparcara el bajo para tocar la guitarra. Casi me cuesta imaginármelo con otro instrumento.

As if all they had done so far were not enough, the contract with Casablanca included recording solo albums. So Kiss and her manager had a plan that would lead them to the top in popularity.First, a movie (I'll talk about it) and secondly, release in one day (September 18, 1978) four LPs, one of each musician.

The four albums were  shaped in the tastes of each musician and didn't featured other members of the band to record songs.

I begin with Gene Simmons' solo efford, simply because this one comes up first at Wikipedia.

It's very diverse, with more songs closer to pop-rock than to heavy rock, including a cover version of When You Wish Upon a Star, Gene had many collaborators (check the complete list in this wikipedia entry ) but I find peculiar that he didn't played the bass and played the guitar. I can hardly imagine him playing another instrument.

Roxy Music, More Than This 1982.

More Than This is the opening tune of Roxy Music's swam song's Avalon. My favourite Roxy Music album is so complex and elegant (that's the adjective always adhered to Brian Ferry). There is no Brian Eno, but Ferry himself played that parts. And so perfectly that it was the foundation of the sound of his Solo career.

Avalon is an amazing album that presents a band so mature that it fall from the tree too early (Fallen leaves in the night / Who can say where they´re blowing). And one last thing to point at: Manzanera's guitars lines! So many bright ideas in so concise parts.

Double Platinum, 1978.

Después de publicar en cuatro años seis discos y dos dobles en directo, la banda estaba exhausta. Así que un disco doble de grandes éxitos no estaba de más. Pero si hay algo que he aprendido con Kiss es que los discos de Grandes éxitos suyo no puede ser lo mismo que si lo hiciese cualquier fan juntando canciones de los discos originales en una cinta o un CD. ¡Tiene que tener canciones nuevas, cosas nuevas! Los fans siempre lo primero.

Así que este disco está llenito de canciones fantásticas remezcladas e incluso con partes nuevas. Aquí una pista de batería nueva, allí una nueva estructura de canción. Todo nuevo y fresco. Y para completar la cosa, regalitos extra. Podéis verlo en la Wikipedia y en Kiss FAQ.

Curiosamente, el disco no llegó a ser doble platino, aunque le faltó poco. Ironías del destino.

After publishing in four years six albums and two live LPs, the band was exhausted. So a double greatest hits was a natural choice. But if there's something I have learned with Kiss is that his greatest hits may not be the same as if any fan gathered songs from the original LPs into a tape or CD. You have to have new songs, new goodies! The fans always come first.
So this album is plenty of fantastic songs remixed and even with new tracks. Here you can find a new drum track, there you can find a new song structure. All new and fresh. And extra goodies. You can see that in Wikipedia and in Kiss FAQ.
Curiously, the LP never rised to double platinum (it almost did).

Portada de Hulk #1 con muñequitos de acción.

Esta pareja de muñequitos representan la primera portada protagonizada por Hulk. Como podéis comprobar, Hulk es el gris, tal y cómo se representó al principio. El coloso verde vendría después.

¡Hágase la luz!

La segunda imagen, mucho más clara nos muestra  a los dos muñecos con su color y detalle real, menos parecidos a la portada, pero muy chulos.

Esta última imagen de los muñequitos, que es un poco Creepy, muestra cómo se mete el muñequito de Banner en la espalda de Hulk, hasta llegar a integrarse con el monstruo.
